Hypochlorous Acid for Wound Care: How Does It Work?

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) has become increasingly popular in wound care, but what makes it particularly interesting is that it is not foreign to the body. HOCl is naturally produced by the immune system as part of its defence against infection.
Its combination of antimicrobial activity and relatively good tissue compatibility has led to its use in wound cleansing and management across human and veterinary medicine.
What Is Hypochlorous Acid?
Hypochlorous acid is produced naturally by certain white blood cells, particularly neutrophils.
When neutrophils encounter invading microorganisms, they undergo a process known as a respiratory burst. As part of this response, they generate HOCl, which helps destroy microorganisms at the site of infection.
In simple terms, HOCl is one of the tools the immune system already uses to help control pathogens.
How Does HOCl Help With Wound Care?
A good wound cleanser needs to reduce contamination without unnecessarily damaging the healthy cells required for healing.
This is where appropriately formulated hypochlorous acid solutions can be particularly useful.
Antimicrobial Activity
HOCl has broad antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi and viruses.
Reducing the microbial burden within a wound helps create an environment more favourable for normal healing and can reduce the opportunity for microorganisms to establish themselves.
Biofilm Management
Biofilms are organised communities of microorganisms that attach to surfaces and become surrounded by a protective matrix.
They can develop within wounds and make microorganisms considerably more difficult to remove.
HOCl has demonstrated activity against biofilms and may help disrupt or reduce their formation, making it useful as part of appropriate wound cleaning and management.
Good Tissue Compatibility
Some antiseptics can be effective against microorganisms but also irritating or damaging to the healthy cells involved in wound repair.

This makes HOCl particularly useful when repeated wound cleansing is required.
Supporting the Healing Environment

Depending on the injury, this could include debridement, pain relief, antibiotics, suturing, dressings or other treatment.
HOCl is a wound management tool, not a replacement for appropriate veterinary care when it is needed.
Not All HOCl Products Are the Same
The concentration, pH, stability and formulation of an HOCl product all influence how it performs.
For wound care, use a product specifically formulated and appropriately labelled for wound cleansing rather than assuming any product containing hypochlorous acid is suitable for application to living tissue.

Hypochlorous acid offers an interesting combination of broad antimicrobial activity and good tissue compatibility, making it a useful option for wound cleansing.
It works alongside the body's natural healing processes rather than replacing them.
