Integrated Pest Management: Getting Off the Chemical Treadmill

Pest control should be about management, not simply reaching for another chemical.
Whether we're dealing with mites, worms, flies, bacteria or other pests, relying heavily on chemical treatments can eventually create another problem: resistance.
This cycle is sometimes called the chemical treadmill.
What Is the Chemical Treadmill?
When a pesticide, antiparasitic or antimicrobial is used repeatedly, susceptible organisms are removed while individuals with greater resistance may survive and reproduce.
Over time, this can lead to:
- Reduced effectiveness of treatments
- More frequent applications
- Increasing doses or concentrations
- Switching to different products
- Increasing treatment costs
- Fewer effective treatment options remaining
The answer isn't necessarily to eliminate chemical treatments. It is to use them more intelligently.
This is where Integrated Pest Management, or IPM, comes in.
What Is Integrated Pest Management?
IPM combines multiple strategies to keep pests and parasites below levels that cause unacceptable harm.
Instead of asking:
"What chemical should I use?"
We start by asking:
"Why is this pest becoming a problem, how significant is it, and what combination of tools will control it most effectively?"
Chemical treatment becomes one tool in the toolbox, rather than the entire toolbox.
1. Start With Good Management
Healthy animals and well-managed environments are generally better equipped to cope with disease and parasite challenges.
For poultry and bird systems, this can include:
- Appropriate nutrition
- Suitable stocking densities
- Good ventilation
- Appropriate housing
- Reducing unnecessary stress
- Providing opportunities for natural behaviours
- Maintaining realistic production expectations
Management won't eliminate every parasite or disease, but it can dramatically change how vulnerable a flock is to them.
2. Improve Hygiene and the Environment
Many pest populations can be reduced simply by making the environment less favourable for them.
This might involve:
- Regular removal of accumulated organic material
- Keeping bedding dry
- Cleaning feeders and drinkers
- Removing pest harbourage
- Managing cracks and crevices where mites hide
- Controlling rodents and wild bird access
- Cleaning before disinfecting
- Using disinfectants and pesticides correctly
Good environmental management reduces the pressure placed on chemical treatments.
3. Monitor Before You Treat
This is one of the most important principles of IPM.
If you aren't monitoring, you don't really know what you're treating.
Monitoring might include:
- Fecal egg counts for internal parasites
- Red mite traps
- Physical examination of birds
- Regular body weight or production monitoring
- Environmental inspection
- Laboratory testing where appropriate
Importantly, finding a parasite doesn't always mean immediate treatment is necessary.
Many biological systems can tolerate low parasite burdens without significant disease. The aim of IPM isn't necessarily zero pests. It is keeping populations below the point where they cause meaningful harm.
4. Use Biological and Physical Controls
Nature already contains countless relationships between predators, parasites and competing organisms.
Biological control uses these relationships to our advantage.
For example, predatory mites can be used as part of red mite management programmes. Physical barriers, environmental modification, trapping and removal can also reduce pest populations without relying solely on pesticides.
The best option depends entirely on the pest and the system involved.
5. Use Chemical Treatments Strategically
Sometimes chemical treatment is absolutely appropriate.
IPM isn't anti-chemical. It is about using the right treatment, at the right time, for the right reason.
That means identifying the problem, choosing an appropriate product, using it correctly and evaluating whether it actually worked.
Unnecessary prophylactic treatment can increase selection pressure for resistance while exposing animals and the environment to treatments they may not have needed.
The Goal Isn't Zero
One of the biggest shifts in thinking with IPM is accepting that complete eradication isn't always necessary or achievable.
A small parasite population that isn't causing disease may be far less concerning than repeatedly treating an entire flock in an attempt to maintain an artificial zero-pest environment.
The goal is a stable, manageable system where pest populations remain below levels that significantly affect health, welfare or production.

Good husbandry, hygiene, monitoring, biological control, environmental management and targeted chemical treatments can all work together.
Chemicals remain valuable tools. But when they become our only tool, we increase the risk of resistance, treatment failure and an ever-growing dependence on the next product.
