The Seasonal Squeeze Inside the Hen
As the days lengthen and spring approaches, many backyard hens begin laying again after their winter break. Owners often notice reddening combs, increased interest in nest boxes and the welcome return of fresh eggs.
Inside the hen, however, this change involves a major hormonal and physical transformation. If she has gained too much weight during winter or has been eating a very high energy diet, coming into lay can expose a serious underlying problem: fatty liver disease.
In its most severe form, this is called fatty liver haemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS). The liver becomes enlarged, soft and fragile as fat accumulates within it. In severe cases, the liver can rupture and bleed into the body cavity, sometimes causing sudden death with very little warning.
Why Laying Places Extra Demands on the Liver
A hen's liver is central to egg production.
As increasing day length stimulates the reproductive system, rising oestrogen levels signal the liver to manufacture large quantities of fat and protein needed to produce egg yolks. These nutrients are packaged and transported through the bloodstream to the developing follicles within the ovary.
Some increase in liver activity and fat content is therefore completely normal in a laying hen. Trouble begins when the liver is already processing more energy than the bird can use.
Chickens are extremely efficient at turning surplus dietary energy, particularly carbohydrates, into fat. When calorie intake repeatedly exceeds the energy required for maintenance, activity and egg production, fat begins accumulating around the abdominal organs and within the liver itself.
When laying begins, the hormonal drive for further fat production increases dramatically.
The combination of excess calorie intake, increased body fat and an active reproductive system creates the perfect conditions for fatty liver disease to develop.
This is also why the condition is predominantly associated with laying hens rather than roosters, and why a hen can appear perfectly well while significant disease is developing internally.
"Healthy Treats" Can Still Provide Too Much Energy
A well formulated commercial layer feed is designed to provide energy, protein, calcium, vitamins and trace minerals in the correct proportions.
Problems often begin when that balanced feed becomes only part of the diet.
Scratch grain, cracked maize, sunflower seeds, bread, pasta, mealworms and many kitchen scraps are calorie dense. Feeding significant quantities can also dilute the protein, calcium and micronutrients supplied by the complete ration. A hen may happily fill herself with favourite extras while eating less of the food actually formulated to support egg production.
Importantly, it is the total energy intake that matters, not simply whether a food is considered "fatty".
Even a relatively low fat diet that is very high in carbohydrates can drive fat production within the liver.
Treats should therefore remain a small addition to the diet, generally no more than around 10% of the total diet, and should never replace a nutritionally complete feed.
Exercise matters too.
Hens confined to small areas, or birds that have become heavy and reluctant to move, expend considerably less energy. Providing space to forage, safe perches and opportunities for natural scratching and movement can help increase activity.
However, exercise cannot compensate for chronic overfeeding.
The Seasonal Squeeze Inside the Hen
This is where things become particularly interesting.
The internal change between a hen that isn't laying and one actively producing eggs is significant.
The resting ovary contains small, undeveloped follicles and the oviduct is relatively short and inactive. Once production begins, several large, yolk filled follicles may be developing simultaneously, while the oviduct becomes a large, highly active organ responsible for forming the albumen, membranes and shell around each egg.
All of this has to fit inside the hen's coelomic cavity, the main body cavity containing the liver, digestive tract and reproductive organs.
Unlike mammals, birds do not have a diaphragm separating the chest from the abdomen. Their delicate air sacs extend throughout the body cavity and play an essential role in moving air through the lungs.
In a healthy, lean hen, there is normally enough functional space to accommodate the changes associated with laying.
In an overweight hen, things can become much more crowded.
The body cavity may already contain substantial abdominal fat and an enlarged, fatty liver. Now add an active ovary containing multiple large follicles, an enlarged oviduct and potentially an egg moving through the reproductive tract.
Suddenly, there isn't a lot of spare room.
When Obesity Starts Affecting Breathing
This internal crowding can restrict the air sacs and reduce the space available for normal respiratory movement.
An affected hen may:
- become breathless with relatively mild activity
- show tail bobbing while breathing
- hold her wings away from her body
- pant excessively, particularly during warm weather
- become considerably more breathless when handled or restrained
These birds are sometimes assumed to have a respiratory infection, when the underlying problem may actually be excessive body condition and caloric intake.
The additional weight and pressure within the body cavity can also reduce mobility and make walking, jumping and perching uncomfortable.
This creates a vicious cycle. The hen moves less, expends less energy and becomes even more prone to accumulating fat.
Excess abdominal fat may also interfere with normal egg passage, contributing to reproductive complications such as prolapse and internal breakage of eggs.
Meanwhile, an enlarged, fatty and fragile liver is more vulnerable to tearing during exertion, handling or the physical contractions associated with laying.
What Does Fatty Liver Disease Look Like?
One of the problems with fatty liver disease is that it can be extremely difficult to recognise from appearance alone.
A hen can look relatively normal right up until significant disease is present.
Warning signs can include:
- excessive body weight or a soft, heavy abdomen
- reduced activity or reluctance to perch
- declining egg production
- panting, tail bobbing or increased breathing effort
- a pale comb or wattles, particularly if internal bleeding has occurred
- sudden collapse or death in a hen that previously appeared healthy and was laying well
Unfortunately, sudden death can be the first obvious sign of FLHS.
On post mortem examination, affected birds typically have an enlarged, pale, greasy and fragile liver, often accompanied by substantial abdominal fat. If the liver has ruptured, a large amount of blood or a blood clot may be found within the coelomic cavity.
Reducing the Risk of Fatty Liver Disease
Prevention ideally begins before the laying season starts.
Feed an age appropriate, nutritionally complete ration as the main diet and avoid continually topping it up with large amounts of calorie dense extras.
Provide clean water and plenty of opportunities for walking, scratching, foraging and other natural activity.
Artificial lighting should also be used thoughtfully. Prolonged lighting designed to stimulate greater egg production places additional demands on the reproductive system and should not be considered without taking the hen's age, body condition and overall health into account.
Most importantly, learn how to assess body condition, rather than relying solely on appearance or scale weight.
Breed size varies enormously and feathers can hide both obesity and significant weight loss. Learning to safely assess the keel, breast muscle and abdominal fat can tell you far more about a hen's condition than simply looking at her.
Avoid repeatedly squeezing or deeply palpating the abdomen of a hen suspected of having liver or reproductive disease.
When to Seek Veterinary Help
Any hen showing laboured breathing, collapse, significant abdominal enlargement, difficulty laying or a noticeably pale comb should receive prompt veterinary attention.
These signs are not specific to fatty liver disease. Similar symptoms can occur with egg retention, coelomitis, internal laying, heart disease, tumours and a range of other potentially serious conditions.
Coming into lay is completely normal, but it is also one of the most metabolically demanding periods in a hen's life.
Keeping hens lean, active and correctly nourished gives both the liver and reproductive system the best chance of managing that seasonal transition safely.
