What is Canker (Trichomoniasis)
What is Canker (Trichomoniasis)
Canker, also known as trichomoniasis, is a common parasitic disease in birds caused by Trichomonas gallinae. It primarily affects pigeons, doves, and raptors, but can also infect other bird species. The parasite typically targets the mouth, throat, crop, and oesophagus, leading to yellowish-white plaques, swelling, difficulty swallowing, weight loss, and in severe cases, death. Transmission occurs through contaminated water, food, or regurgitation during feeding. Early signs can be subtle, so prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential. Antiprotozoal medications are effective when caught early, and prevention focuses on good hygiene, clean feeding areas, and isolating infected birds.
