Avian Chlamydiosis PCR Test for Birds

Avian Chlamydiosis PCR Test is an accurate laboratory PCR screening test designed to help detect Chlamydia psittaci in birds. Using a simple swab sample, this assay assists with early detection of avian chlamydiosis (psittacosis) and can support quarantine, treatment planning, aviary management, and biosecurity decisions.

Avian chlamydiosis can affect a wide range of bird species including parrots, pigeons, doves, aviary birds, and wildlife species. Clinical signs may include respiratory disease, lethargy, weight loss, nasal discharge, diarrhoea, poor feather condition, reduced appetite, or chronic illness.

Available as:

  • Single bird PCR testing (1 swab)
  • Pooled aviary/flock PCR testing (5 swabs)

Helpful Resources

Respiratory disease and chronic illness in birds can have significant impacts on aviary health, quarantine management, wildlife rehabilitation, and long-term bird wellbeing. Early testing and strong biosecurity practices play important roles in reducing disease spread and supporting informed management decisions. Check out our helpful avian health resource below::

What is Avian Chlamydiosis

Avian chlamydiosis, caused by Chlamydia psittaci, is a bacterial infection that affects many bird species, including parrots, pigeons, and poultry. It can cause symptoms such as respiratory distress, lethargy, weight loss, and diarrhea. The disease can be difficult to diagnose, as symptoms may vary, and some birds may show no signs at all. Avian chlamydiosis is also a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted to humans, where it can cause flu-like symptoms or more severe respiratory issues. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics are essential to managing the disease and preventing its spread.

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a molecular biology technique used to amplify and analyze DNA. In the context of Egg Drop Syndrome, PCR is employed to detect the presence of the virus in samples.
